When analzying a city, I judge its worth based on the depth of its connection to hip-hop and the overall quality of its rappers. Unfortunately for Chicago, the windy city is lacking in any legit lyrical prowess. Common? Lupe Fiasco? Kanye West? Twista? Nothing really of quality except maybe excerpts of Like Water For Chocolate. Therefore, I can only come to the conclusion that Chicago sucks. Though, it does have Mr. Chi City, which has got to count for something.
Still, I won't rule out the possibility of something decent coming from Chicago and, wouldn't you know, it exists! I would even take it a step further and say that Scotia Widows are better than decent: they're good! The band has ex-members of MK-Ultra, Sick/Tired, Pedestrians, and many more I've never heard. Looking at the resume of the band, one would expect fast, thrashy hardcore, but that's not the case here. Instead, the band plays solid mid-paced punk with clearly sung female vocals and the occasional dude vocals. Naturally, I hear echoes of X sans the rockabilly tip combined with a more hardcore spirit.
The demo opens up with "Amish Sluts," which is no doubt their catchiest moment on the demo and probably my favorite song on it. The rest of the songs follow suit and are all pretty good. I don't think I can find any noticably weak moments on the demo, so that's a plus. It's really just a fun punk demo. It has some pop qualities to it and, despite its energetic nature, isn't overly-stoked or anything annoying. I don't really come across that very often, so it's very welcomed.
I would definitely recommend that you check this out. Only 100 copies of this CD-R were made and I don't know if there are any left, but you should definitely contact the band if interested. While not normally my thing, I am still looking forward to seeing where this band goes.

Adam,
Thanks for posting. The first 60 are gone and the last 40 are in the process of being put together.
Its probably easier to just download it here, but if anyone is interested in the real thing, they can contact us here:

I must take issue with your assesment of chicago's hip hop. Of course, that may be due to the fact that Common is easily my favorite MC after the inimitable KRS One. Common really turned me back on to hip hop in 2005 with Be, and that album has remained a favorite of mine around the holiday season.
Other reasons to love the windy city-
The Shakefork Records scene of the late 80s and early 90s
Screeching Weasel
The Methadones
Cap'n Jazz
RESURRECTION is one of the best hip hop albums of all time and JUICE is probably the best freestyler of all time, who says chi can't bring it
YEA BIG + KID STATIC = BEST CHICAGO HIP HOP
-Evander Holywar
Its true that RESURRECTION is one of the best and most classic hip hop albums of all time, but Typical Cats first full length album is one of the greatest examples of talented, soulful Chicago hip hop as well. I highly recommend it.
There are also a few releases from various members of the Molemen and now defunct Nacrobats crews that are worth checking out, especially Thai One Davis'(Nacrobats) first full length as well.
I guess you've never heard of Rhymefest, you squat hump!
TEBH - i just can't get down with Common
Evander - zzzzz
elginleech - haven't heard any of the shit aside from Common that you mentioned. they sound interesting. thanks for the recommendations!
anonymous - the guy who allows his somewhat-clever rhymes to be shit on by kanye's awful flow? no thanks. and what is a squat hump?
to everyone: talk about Scotia Widows, not hip-hop!

Im glad we could spark this enthralling conversation about Chicago hip-hop.
Im curious if anyone can pin-point who they think Gina's vocals sound like, because I can not. I don't really see the X comparison at all.
Oh, I didn't mean to make a comparison between Exene and Gina. Their voices are completely different. My bad for being unclear.

Oh yeah Scotia Widows..They're pretty good and I was pretty pumped to see them having grown up being a fan of Trepan Nation and MK-ULTRA. They played a bar near my house fairly recently and I definitely enjoyed it. I have to admit though after a while I kind of felt the songs were a little bit all over the place. Still good nonetheless and I'll definitely go see them again.
Elginleech....yeah. Our songs are kinda all over the place. We're new and are still figuring shit out. We also had a different drummer initially. Since we got David...we actually write dings together vs one person bringing in a song that is done.
Elgin was fun. I want to play there again.
Savage(Kirk) ... I can pinpoint who my vocals sound like.... A sweet angel that fell from heaven. Yeah. That's it. Haha!
Just wait until we finish our hip hop song. Brads gonna sing it...er...rap on it.
stoked for the hip-hop song. it will be nice to hear a GOOD song from you guys for a change!

Elgin,
I am assuming when you say "all over the place" that you are talking about the fact that they combine melodic singing with the occasional aggro vocals? Ive never seen them live, but I downloaded this and I think the contrast is great. Kind of like early Husker Du or even in the style of bands like Witchhunt or something.
