DJ Cam's long-out-of-print Mad Blunted Jazz is a crucal pair of ying-yang downtempo/trip-hop platters. On the first disc, initially titled Underground Vibes, Cam draws the listener in with tastefully sporadic samples, kickin' drums and blue elodies. I'm no scholar on the genres his tunes fall under, but sometimes Cam's compositions are reminiscent of the Brick score in their subdued, noirish sparsity.

Disc two, Mad Blunted Jazz [Live] (originally titled Underground Lives), is where Cam shows that he's one hundred percent capable of recreating his atmospheres in a setting where studio advantages aren't available. Often, live bonuses on CD releases are subpar filler. Such is not the case here-- both halves of the album are at the least complete equals in terms of quality. Check out this record and imagine yourself as a film noir protagonist, seated in a smoky club where the DJ's beats match the mood in your head. Or, you know...just chill.

Ninja Tune and Shadow owned the 90's. Great after party music here. Cheers.
