Artist: Valley of the Dinosaurs/Helen Killers
Album: Split 3" CD-R
Release: 2006
Label: Self-Released
Tracklist:
1. Valley of the Dinosaurs - Seas of Change
2. The Helen Killers - Tavish Got Tamed
Some split releases are ideally like a great issue of Marvel Team-Up. Two icons of awesome joining forces and doing what they do best. On this record, two of Kitsap County's finest manage to do just that. Originally meant to be a 7", but ending up as a DIY 3" CD, the Helen Killers and Valley of the Dinosaurs created a mere 50 of these for their 2006 west coast summer tour.
"Seas Of Change" is a perfect midway point for Valley. It bears the harmonized guitars, howling feedback and hopeful tone of the first EP, but simultaneously hints at the rawer sound the band would end with the following year. Frontman Jason Clackley is in top form, effortlessly switching from anguished barks to melodic croons. The verse riff alone was always a surefire circle pit-starter in a live setting.
The Hellen Killers' contribution points to an off-color inside joke only in title. "Tavish Got Tamed" captures the group in the best part of their short career-- as a quartet who had moved on from merely emulating At the Drive-In to loving City of Caterpillar and Envy while adding their own sounds. Specifically, this means the offbeat guitar styles of Steve Ringo and Nick Mann and how, along with Peter Frankland's supportive basslines, they mesh with and play against the quirky rhythms and breaks of singing drummer Justin Gallego's percussive, distinct playing.
Both bands were especially unique in a time where Kitsap was (for the better) teeming with kids playing oldschool-styled hardcore. It's only fitting that the true scene innovators would be close friends and work together.
