Nazi Dust - Self Titled 7"

Artist: Nazi Dust
Album: Self Titled 7"
Release: 2009
Label: Youth Attack!

Tracklist:

1. Hatred Side
2. Invest And Sacrifice
3. Fervor
4. Impulse Control
5. Bad Blood
6. Exhaustion
7. Ego Victim

It's been months since all of the unnecessary hype surrounded Nazi Dust and their debut 7", and, after all the dust (I RULE!) has finally settled, we can reexamine this release. No, this is not the best hardcore record of the year, nor is it, on the other, contrarian pole, utter garbage. Instead, the 7" is a solid offering of straight edge hardcore which is juxtaposed with a M********* aesthetic that is to be expected nowadays. Still, in sound, the band doesn't really fit that well with the Youth Attack! roster in that it's way musically straightforward.

The one thing that sets this apart from being (and I use this word with no negative connotations) standard hardcore is the vocals, which is the strongest part of the band. The weird bark of their ethnically-confusing singer (is he Black? Latino?? Blatino??? Sicilian with a tan????) is pretty insane and keeps me on edge, enhancing the music around him and keeping things exciting. Also, props to the killer guitar tone and leads.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I prefer this to their demo, even if there's no DYS cover. The two best tracks from that, "Bad Blood" and "Fervor," make their definitive appearances here along with five other moshable songs that prove that the band is definitely capable of producing some great hardcore. The new material is definitely up to part with the old material. "Hatred Side" is an excellent opener, "Exhaustion" is particularly furious, and the intro to "Ego Victim" sounds frighteningly similar to Primus' "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" and that is just AWESOME.

This 7" definitely capitalizes on a lot of the promise of the demo, which, truth be told, piqued my interest, but didn't do much more for me otherwise. I feel like the band still needs to be a bit tighter and more dynamic, but this is still eight minutes of excellent music. Get into it.

Let it be known that this is not that shitty rip of the 7" that was leaked on a bunch of blogs, but straight from the computer from which it was recorded. 320kbps, baby!

Also, does anyone know why Monteclair High School in New Jersey loves this band so much?

in regards to the montclair statement, all this youth attack stuff has become highly popular among the kids who frequent the Meatlocker in montclair, and my guess is they go to that high school as well.

Colman - I never said mixed race! I said ethnically-confusing. I know the differences between race and ethnicity!

pishposh - Because they came in full force to the Nazi Dust show at my place + I live with an older brother of one of them.

anon - thanks for the info!

haha, why do you even care? another pc white boy getting butthurt

Hmmm..yeah. What's all the hype about?

I'd like to complain about the race issue as well.

what kind of stupid question is "why do you even care"? because it's out in the public, that's why. if you simply were to make your shitty blog full of repeated kiss-ass and self-worth reviews private then maybe i wouldn't mind it so much considering i (and everyone else who isn't on your list) wouldn't be able to view it. in fact, that'd make the most sense for you anyway. but since it's out in the open, i do care. also from a journalistic perspective it's down-right, goddamn offensive. why mention something like that without any real context behind it? unless this is some "in joke" you thought of while you were nut-swinging from nazi dust this past january.

also you and your little friends like nazi dust as much as the montclair kids. no need to sound so exclusive in this regard. ha, but again this all goes back to your self-gratification and luxury.

the kids from montclair who are finding the youth attack hype cool dont go to the meatlocker they just are a bunch of 16 year old fags who get stupid and drunk at shows, not respecting music, just going out with their parents money to give it to mark mccoy

angry anonymous - i didn't even realize i was nut-swinging from nazi dust at all. i didn't even review the demo tape or even talk about it in any forum, let alone the blog. i wasn't blown away by it and i'm not even in love with the 7", though i think it's good. also, i feel like most of my friends don't even like them.

if you want to make wild assumptions about myself and my friends, then why don't you email the blog and we can discuss this, instead of you hiding behind the anonymity the internet affords you. this is a blog of random thoughts, not a piece of journalism. if you believe they share the standards, you need to reevaluate your view of blogs.

as for the "race" issue, sorry if people are offended by a stupid "in-joke." it didn't even bother KP.

that anonymous is a fucking dipshit

fair enough. for the record i wasn't targeting you personally. i apologize for the "friends" comment as well. i, in no way, hold any quarrels. i just think it didn't exactly make sense to insert that in, what appear to be, a review. this is a blog for reviewing music, no? some of your reviews are on point and informative and that's where they should stand. once you venture off the subject of music it can get ugly. if you want to add "random thoughts" then you can open up a separate blog for things of that nature and you can decipher whomever's race you'd like.

I don't see anything inherently offensive about mentioning someone's race absentmindedly in a non-negative light, but what do I know? The bottom line is the singer's tuff tattoo is decidedly ill. On an unrelated note, I wasn't particularly impressed with this release.

im anonymous and talking about race hurts my feelings

Thank you for at least scaling back the hostility. Your complaint about writing about more than just the music in our "reviews" is something we've heard before.

Truth be told, we don't really care about whatever arbitrary (to us, at least) convention exists for writing proper reviews. We're just a bunch of losers who want to write whatever comes to mind about particular releases we enjoy. Most people will be bored out of their minds and hate it, but it's what we want to do.

As for the race thing, yes, I inserted a useless comment as a dumb little joke, but to view things through a racial lens is something two of us (being Arab and Black) is something we can't help nor really want to. It comes out in the most "random" of places (like this review) and not just on race blogs. Whether you like it or not (and clearly you don't,) at least see our perspective.

It shouldn't matter, though, because you think this is a shitty blog and reading it is a waste of your time.

And, god, I would never want to try and have a serious blog. Those are even worse than this kind.

don't be mad just cause you called out for being part of the little youth attack hype scene you make these snide comments about

icoulddietomorrow said...

If you look at the list of the reviews I've written, three of many are YA! bands: two of Cult Ritual and one of Nazi Dust.

These people are my friends and I love what they're doing and I want to spread the word. I don't really give a shit about the rest of the label. It is what it is.
