I am a gigantic Jonah Jenkins fan. Whether it’s his early and classic days in the immortal and woefully underrated Only Living Witness, his fuzzy turn in Miligram or his surprisingly raw current outfit, Raw Radar War, the man is a fantastic lyricist, a charismatic presence and a musically gifted human being.
But Jonah is also one generous motherfucker and actively promotes free digital downloads of his tunes. On A Field Of White is a brand-new slab of 7” vinyl and was just posted by the man himself on Facebook last night. The EP concerns Simo Hayha, Finland’s most aggressive patriot and easily the biggest lone-gunman badass in modern military history. You can read more about him here, but for now, here’s a quick summary: One WWII sniper. 100 days. Limited daylight. One rifle. 505 registered kills. And even when the Russians finally got to him after a slew of counter-sniping and artillery fire, and shot him in the head, dude did not die. The bullet blew off a good part of his cheek and crushed his jaw, but he regained consciousness on the very day peace was declared between Finland and Russia. He hunted moose, trained dogs and lived on his own until his death at the age of 96 in 2002.
Jonah and co. do a solid job of aurally representing Hayha’s formidable marksmanship and the dark chaos of war with their sludgy, battering hardcore. While the biting guitars do draw some from Entombed, I wouldn’t say it’s anywhere to the level that bands like Nails and Black Breath do. At not even 8 minutes, these fast, loud songs get in and get out...just like the man they were inspired by.

Actually, this short war with Hayha began and ended before Finland's alliance with Nazi Germany.

When you've been HC for longer than some of these kids have been alive, you better have learned a thing or two - this band has, and sadly, most folks WON'T come close to "getting it".

actually the Finns were aligned with the Nazis out of convenience, but there were Jews and black soldiers fighting along side the Nazis against the Russians, and, for instance, when the Nazis tried to decorate the Jews with Iron Crosses, the Jews waited until the last minute, and ceremoniously REFUSED to be decorated by the Nazis. Jews were celebrating religious holidays in battle just feet away from Nazi troops, and they gained the respect of their ideological opposites.
The Finns were the first in the world to grant universal suffrage.
Marshall Mannerheim struggled with the burden of how to beat the Russians while not creating eternal enemies in the Russians.
He succeeded, but the term Finlandization, as a result, is often used in a derogatory way. It was however, a major shift in military and political thinking.
The political complexities of this alignment, to defeat such an overwhelming military power, while maintaining the principles of an open society, and create a peaceful future existence is a lesson to everyone thinking in terms of black and white, literally or otherwise.
icdt not just hardcore but a lesson in real history too.
