All the good tunes coming out of Olympia make me a proud Washingtonian. Whether it’s lo-fi death metal like Bone Sickness, shoegaze/post-punk like Broken Water, or the ‘80s SST fuzz attack of these longhairs (and one beardo), the state capital is home to bands that are alike in approach, not sound: DIY, plenty of heart, and no need for tacky aesthetics.
Milk Music blew up the blogosphere last year with their Beyond Living 12”, a six-song collection of disenchanted outsider jams possessing-- in addition to, you know, the songs being quite fantastic in and of themselves-- some of the most monstruous, warm tube guitar sounds this side of Neil Young or J Mascis. The band’s purposeful Ludditism bodes mystique, and mystique boded many people asking “No, seriously, who are these dudes?” upon discovering they had little web representation other than a Last.fm page. Brandon Stosuy’s semi-recent interview with mainman Alex Coxen remedied this to a satisfactory degree, and additionally offered five well-engineered live-in-the-studio cuts recorded during the band’s well-recieved spring 2011 tour plus a 4-minute “interview” that merely confirms 1) dudes clearly toke 2) they don’t have any hair grooming advice.
If they plan to continue releasing DIY 12” records, color me stoked.
